“The more work I did for popular Christian authors, churches, and some of the largest ministries in the world, the more need I saw in my own life and in the Church, for good sound theology. Nothing energizes the church more than the right understanding of God through his Word and Spirit, and nothing could be more exciting. The Theology Project comes alongside laypersons and leaders to help intentionally elevate the role of theology in their personal and congregational life. I dream of an army of lay theologians, with a Gospel that clarifies the complex and beautifies the commonplace!”

When I think of the Theology Project, the Apostle Paul’s warning about “every wind of doctrine” comes to mind. Over the last 25 or so years that I have known Holt Vaughn, he has always been concerned that the church has been somewhat tossed about rather than anchored by the Word of God. Hence the Theology Project - a plan to see God's people “rightly dividing the word of truth” so that believers will know the difference between popular trends and lasting truth. The word of the Lord endures forever. I am praying that the Theology Project helps us take the long-term view. Eph. 4:14, 2 Tim. 2:15, 1 Peter 1:25.

Holt writes that carrying out The Theology Project’s vision will “yield a more meaningful, vibrant personal, family and congregational life” and that it will result in “such things as understanding the Bible for yourself, sharing with and teaching your friends and family, understanding doctrine, and applying good theology to today’s most pressing issues.” And most importantly, carrying out the vision will “reach out to and invite in, those who don’t yet know or follow Christ.” As both a lawyer and an ordained pastor serving in the local church, these are objectives that are dear to my heart, part of my thinking, and ends I have sought to reach in my own life and work as a follower of Jesus.

It has been my privilege to know Holt and, to see and share in his love for God. There is no doubt that all of us following Christ are under construction. Knowing more about Him, living fuller lives reflecting Him and, proclaiming complete reliance upon His Word and Presence requires us to dig deep daily. It is God's absolute truth, delivered with love, that unifies homes and powers up hearts.
